It’s a question we’ve all found ourselves asking from time to time, usually when we’re perilously close to the end of the bottle. Just how do I make my perfume last longer? Perfumes aren’t the cheapest of products (though thanks to discount stores such as Scentsational, we’re looking to change that) and so you’d be forgiven in wanting to eke out every last drop that your bottle has to offer. Fortunately, we’ve got a few tips and tricks on how to make your perfume last longer! So, read on…
Know When To Apply Your Perfume
Now, clearly, the goal here is to use as little perfume as possible, whilst still getting the same fragrant effect. One of the best times to apply your fragrance is when you’ve just had a shower. The still-damp skin will help get the most out of the fragrance, but you don’t want to immediately negate that effect by putting your clothes on – this runs the risk of rubbing the perfume off. To avoid this, let your skin air dry – it’s always a nice thing to do, anyway! It’s a great way to make your perfume last longer and to feel a little luxurious whilst you do so!
Use Pulse Points
Pulse points are parts of the body where blood is pumped near the skin’s surface. Because of this, they’re some of the warmest parts of the body. That means they’re the ideal place to apply perfume to. Have you ever wondered why the wrist and the neck are such common places that fragrances are applied? Well, that’s why! The following are some of the most effective areas on which to apply your perfume to get the most fragrance from it:
- The wrists
- Behind the ear
- The neck
- The base of the throat
- Inside elbow
- Behind the knee
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise.
The principle behind moisturising prior to applying your perfume is similar to that of applying it just after the shower. Moistened skin will retain a scent better than drier skin, and you’ll find yourself having to use a lot more perfume to get a similar effect as that when you prepare your skin properly, beforehand. It doesn’t need to be an expensive moisturiser or anything, either, just so long as it does what it says on the tin! You can also use petroleum jelly to achieve the same effect.
Don’t Rub In Your Perfume!
It sounds counter-intuitive, you’d think that rubbing the perfume in would perhaps lock in the fragrance more, but in fact the opposite is true. All you’re doing by rubbing in your perfume is actually rubbing it off! If you can’t resist some sort of dabbing action, then do just that: gently dab your pulse points (wrists is always the obvious one) together and then leave it. The perfume doesn’t need help from you, it’s got more than enough punch on its own without needing your assistance on top of it!
Store Your Perfume Properly
Make sure to store your perfume away from direct sunlight. When you’re using something as sparingly as perfume, you don’t want its shelf life to be even more diminished because of degradation. Sunlight can have an adverse effect on perfumes, breaking down some of the oils within it. So, storing your perfume properly not only helps it last longer, it helps it last in its intended state. In other words, how do you make your perfume last longer? Treat it with the care and respect it deserves!
Use Matching Lotions, Gels And Kits
Many modern perfumes come as part of a set or have corresponding body sprays and lotions. By using these as your ‘base’, then applying a smaller amount of perfume over the top, you get a very similar fragrance effect, similar duration and whilst using less of the most expensive part – the perfume, itself.
Keep Your Perfume Bottle As Unshaken As Possible
Now we don’t suppose that too many people are going around vigorously shaking their perfume bottles, but even relatively small amounts of shaking can introduce air into a perfume bottle, which is known to shorten a perfume’s lifespan by accelerating the scent’s breakdown.
